MAPUSA: The town of Mapusa is turning out to be a favourite dumping spot for garbage with the dirty heaps raising their ugly heads in quiet corners and open spaces. Villagers from the neighbourhood too find it convenient to dump their waste wrapped in plastic bags in the open spaces as they make their way to the market.
The civic body has been grappling to handle the arduous task of improper disposal of the garbage within in jurisdiction.
The city fathers say that MMC has placed bins at various places to deposit waste, but people still continue to dump their household trash by the roadside rather than using the bins.
The MMC collects garbage on a door-to-door basis regularly but their efforts to cleanse the city are in vain as irresponsible people continue to dump waste in the open rendering the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan campaign meaningless.
Sources from the municipality revealed that the civic body collects around 35 tonnes of garbage every day and has distributed over 36,000 dust bins to each household for collecting wet and dry waste separately.
They are three teams of workers who collect garbage on a door-to-door basis and a separate group which collects waste from public dustbins.
Daily an open truck, three closed trucks, four rickshaws and a big truck collects waste from the city which is then disposed of at the plant.
Even though the municipality has outsourced garbage collection in 10 wards while other places are handled by daily wage workers under the watchful eye of three different supervisors, garbage still continues to stink in the city.
