PONDA: A bomb scare at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Farmagudi, Ponda, caused panic, as 600 students were evacuated from the campus on Thursday. The threat later turned out to be a hoax.

Ponda Police said that they were contacted by the IIT, Farmagudi, about a bomb threat, informing that IIT is in receipt of an email stating that a peroxide-based device will be activated in the campus at 11 am. IIT-Goa is functioning from a temporary campus at Goa Engineering College (GEC) at Farmagudi.
The police, fire personnel, dog squad, forensics, ambulance, and bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot. After evacuating students from the hostel to a safe location, they conducted a thorough search of the hostel, IIT building, and other GEC buildings, but no bombs were found.
The police finally left at around 5 pm.
Ponda DySP Shivram Vaigankar said, “The police are investigating the source of the threat, as similar messages were received by IITs in Delhi, Bhubaneshwar, and Goa.”
Despite the disruption, examinations scheduled for the afternoon were held smoothly after police completed their search operations.
