MARGAO: Taking serious note of major destruction to the environment by cutting down the trees across the State of Goa and in order to protect the environment for future generations the Parishioners and youth of St Joaquim Chapel, Borda, here, planted more than 300 saplings on the hilly land which belongs to the chapel, near Sonsoddo dumping site.

The initiative of tree plantation was carried out on Sunday under the leadership of Fr Simon D’Cunha, chaplain of St Joaquim Chapel. Youth members, besides other parishioners, have expressed concern for the environment and responsibility towards protecting environment for future generations.
Fr Simon said that all have been witnessing major destruction of the environment by trees being axed across Goa. We have noticed a concrete jungle all over, which was once a land with a treasure of trees.
“On the other hand, in recent times we have also noticed that people are struggling for survival due to shortage of oxygen. We must remember that trees give us oxygen free of cost. Days may come to fix cylinders on our shoulders in order to get the supply of oxygen to live,” he stated.
He said this initiative of Borda parishioners and youth is for the sake of mankind, as they have decided to plant saplings on the land that belong to chapel property.
Fr Jovial Fernandes, a young priest said that this drive of planting saplings aims at protecting the environment for the betterment of future generations.
“Many youth members have come forward in order to plant the saplings, not expecting any benefit for them. But they know that these saplings will surely help to live a happy life for the coming generation,” he stated.
Custodio Fernandes, parishioner of Borda said that on the occasion of Grandparent’s Day they have taken the initiative to plant saplings, as the same was done by their grandparents in earlier times.
Glarissa Noronha, a youth member said that she is feeling happy to plant the saplings for the sake of future generations.
