CURCHOREM: Police Constable Avinash Naik attached to Curchorem police station was awarded Uttam Jeevan Raksha award and a cheque of Rs 1.50 lakh by South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind K Gawas for rescuing around 15 people from drowning in River Zuari when the old footbridge connecting Sanvordem and Curchorem had collapsed in May 2017.
On May 18, 2017 a number of people fell into the river when the old footbridge collapsed due to the overload when the people had gathered on the bridge to watch the search/rescue operation conducted by the Curchorem Fire Service personnel and the police to search the person who had jumped in the river with the intention of committing suicide.
Naik, who was conducting the search operation, immediately jumped into the water and saved the life of 15 people and later rendered assistance to the Costal police to retrieve the body of the person who had committed suicide by jumping into the river.
