CANACONA: Ramchandran Y (31), a native of Tamil Nadu, who was arrested by police for allegedly raping and thereafter robbing a 48-year-old British tourist in the early morning hours of Thursday near Char Rasta, was produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) who remanded him in police custody for 12 days.
It may be recalled that a British tourist was raped and was dispossessed of her belongings which included cash and other valuable items in the wee hours of Thursday. She was returning from Canacona railway station to go to her rented room at Ovrem.
After verifying the facts and collecting vital information, Canacona Police had shared the details with their counterparts and within hours of committing the heinous crime, the accused person one Ramchandran Y, a native of Tanjavor from Tamil Nadu, was taken in to custody by Pernem police for a crime committed in their jurisdiction recently. The Pernem police team had laid a trap to catch him at a hotel in Margao where he was putting up with his accomplice.
On search, he was found to be in possession of the items belonging to the rape victim. On being informed of the findings of Pernem police, Canacona PI Rajendra Prabhudesai rushed to Pernem police station and brought the accused to Canacona, by the time they reached it was past 10.30 pm.
Canacona Police informed that the accused was taken to the JMFC, Canacona who remanded him in police custody. Later, he was taken in a police vehicle to GMC for medical examination.
Police said that the medical examination has confirmed exterior injuries to various parts of his body, while the samples collected would be sent to the forensic lab.
Police informed that since the accused can speak and understand only South Indian languages it was difficult to interrogate him and they will seek services of an interpreter.
Further it was informed that after the expiry of 12 days remand on January 2, the police will ask for further remand of the accused.
Meanwhile, life in the coastal belt of Canacona taluka returned to normalcy after the rape incident that shook the entire taluka on Thursday. Western tourists were seen moving in the coastal areas like nothing has happened and no one seemed bothered about the dastardly act.
Police team investigating the crime was praised even by their critics who used the social media to congratulate them for successfully cracking the case within a couple of hours after the incident.
