PORVORIM: Threats by residents in Moira succeeded in getting BSNL authorities to restore services telephone services in the village.
Residents had recently met to express their outrage at the daily outage of telephones under the Moira Telephone Exchange from around 7 pm to 10 am the next day.
“Since Christmas, Moira had been experiencing phone outage in the evenings which lasts the whole night and part of the next morning and the cause is shutting down of the exchange by the BSNL staff due to low voltage,” said Tony de Sa, a resident.
“The supply at the exchange in one phase goes to about 168V in the evenings and to protect the valuable logic cards used at the exchange, the exchange staff puts off the exchange,” de Sa added.
Floriano Lobo claimed that the land for the exchange was donated to BSNL by the Comunidade de Moira for the benefit of the people. “For this reason, Moira should have been given preferred treatment by the BSNL, but the reality is just the opposite,” he said.
M R Potdar, divisional engineer of Telephone Exchange at Mapusa, informed the aggrieved villagers that one phase supplying current to the exchange drops voltage and endangers logic cards and the exchange is forced to be shut down after dusk.
“I am in contact with the Electricity Department and the department is trying to sort out the problem,” added Potdar.
After residents warned telecom officials at the meeting of various drastic measures, authorities got into the act and services were later restored at the telephone exchange in Moira.
