Campaign intensifies in Ponda taluka

PONDA: Candidates for the forthcoming ZP elections have intensified house-to-house campaigns in various parts of Ponda taluka.

With barely five days to go for the polls, enthusiasm among party and independent candidates has reached feverish pitch. While candidates backed by the BJP have the benefit of ministers and MLAs campaigning for them, independent candidates are also trying hard to provide a tough fight to party candidates.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Industries Minister Mahadev Naik, South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar for BJP and MGP’s PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar and Minister Deepak Dhavalikar have campaigned for the alliance candidates – MGP (5) and BJP (2).
Independent candidate, Dyaneshwar Naik, was seen campaigning from Usgao with a large number of supporters.
When contacted, he expressed confidence of winning the election and claimed that he has a good number of supporters.
MGP candidate Bharat Naik and independents Laxmikant Naik and Yuvraj Naik are also contesting from Usgao and both of them claimed to have the backing of voters.
In all, 27 candidates including MGP-BJP (7) and 20 independents are in the fray. In many constituencies, more than two candidates are fighting with party candidates. In Curti, seven candidates, including MGP, are in the fray, while there is a straight fight between MGP and independent in
Veling Priol.
