CANACONA: IGP Sunil Garg has assured to set up a traffic cell shortly in Canacona taluka.
Garg, as part of his visits to local police stations visited Canacona police station on Thursday evening and interacted with a number of residents, who repeatedly voiced concern over several matters, stressing the need of pro-active police presence in the taluka.
The residents raised issues like spillage of fish water on the roads, traffic indiscipline leading to road blocks, accidents, etc, besides patrolling, insecurity of senior citizens living alone, thefts, tourism-related matters among several other matters.
After a patient hearing, Garg said every citizen of the country is a civilian policeman and they should be always vigilant in their day-to-day activities.
After confirming whether building/accommodation is available, Garg said, “We are shortly setting up a traffic cell in Canacona. A 24-hour helpline for senior citizens in the State is also being launched shortly.”
On the issue of shortage of police personnel, Garg assured to post the remaining constable to equip the Canacona police station with full staff strength. Canacona has presently got two more PSIs in addition to the existing one and posting of six more constables is in the pipeline.
“No doubt police will be pro-active keeping an eye on every development in the area. Henceforth for any lawlessness committed in public, police will take suo motto cognizance and act according to the law and will demand no complaints from the public for police action for any publicly committed crimes,” he said.
“PI is fully authorized to do that. This will also include action on people found disposing garbage and committing other such nuisances,” Garg warned and directed Canacona PI to immediately take cognizance of such notable matters.
IGP Garg ordered late night patrolling in isolated areas and especially at Mastimoll, where a fisherwoman, Vijaya Pagui, was raped and murdered 10 months ago.
He also directed Canacona PI to use his manpower to keep in touch with senior citizens staying alone and help them to go to hospitals, courts or any other tasks which they find difficult.
