MARGAO: As Carmona panchayat is preparing for its gram sabha meeting to be held on August 19, the seven-member panchayat is reduced to having only three functioning members following the resignation of Benicio Carvalho who reportedly resigned on grounds that he does not have time to devote to the panchayat.
While Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas has proceeded on leave that was not approved by the panchayat body and hence is under dispute, another member Allwyn Jorge is presently on leave till the end of August.
It may be recalled that one member Josinho Mendes has expired and that leaves only three functioning panchayat members, namely the Deputy Sarpanch Vailona Fernandes who is presently the acting as Sarpanch and Winston Dias and Sandra Fernandes both having served the panchayat as sarpanchas earlier.
“When elections were held to the panchayat, four members promoted by the Carmona Villagers Social Welfare Forum were elected. However, Allwyn Jorge moved away from the group over some differences,” said Socorro Fernandes the Forum President.
The non-cooperation by the four other panchayat members could be reason why there is such a stress felt by members that Benicio had to resign felt Socorro.
