PANJIM: The Corporation of the City of Panaji Thursday resolved to send the city pay parking proposal to the Collector for notification as well enforce a plastic ban.
In August 2012, the CCP had resolved to introduce pay parking in the city and a decongestion plan was introduced in principle.
Speaking to the media after the meeting Mayor Vaidahi Naik said that the proposal would be sent to the Collector Mihir Vardhan for notification and then it would be implemented stage wise “after taking the people into confidence.”
In another proposal, the CCP banned use of plastic carry bags in its jurisdiction arguing that corporation was finding it difficult to tackle dry waste that was being dumped along the road sides.
Stating that the sheer quantity of plastic carry bags was becoming a major nuisance and a threat to the environment. The CCP is also admitting that its efforts at segregation did not achieve the desired results.
The CCP also put up a proposal on clearing of commercial projects, which was opposed by a section of the corporators, who wanted proper rules to be framed to ensure that provisions are made for parking for commercial projects and if no rules were made then no licences should be given.
The corporation had passed a resolution in May 2011 not to issue construction licenses to commercial projects in the city till new parking regulations are put in place and had even written to the PDA citing the chaotic traffic and claimed that if new commercial projects were allowed the situation would deteriorate.
A visit around the city shows most of commercial projects have parking on public roads, creating bottlenecks and not allowing parking to people moving in and out of the city. However, the CCP has not done anything to change the rules on parking for commercial complexes or enforce that adequate parking be ensured for all commercial complexes.
