Though the notice to the CCP states ‘total stoppage of work’, garbage was collected on Monday.
Speaking to the media, union President Ajitsingh Rane said, “Enough is enough. From today we are starting our strike. We gave enough time for the authorities to resolve our matter, but they have failed.”
Asked if the workers will stop collecting garbage, he said, “No decision has been taken whether to stop collection of garbage. As of now, we will continue collecting garbage. The union’s general body will meet later and will decide on it.”
The union submitted the strike notice to Panjim Mayor Shubham Chodankar and CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues. The union has been demanding regularisation of eligible daily wages workers, enhancement of daily wage rate from Rs 221 (minimum wage) to Rs 409 and payment of eight days salary for the period workers were on strike in December 2014.
CCP, claiming lack of funds says wages cannot be increased. The corporation has, however, agreed to increase the wages to Rs 300 for workers collecting garbage and Rs 260 for other workers, which was rejected by the union.
