PANJIM: The Union Mines Ministry, while stating that its priority is to re-invigorate the mining sector in the iron ore rich states of India, including Goa, has cautioned the state government that intergenerational equity should not be compromised in the process of easing the mining sector.
In a fresh communication to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Union Mines, Steel and Labour Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has expressed concern over negative public perception with regard to mining in the state. Hence, he has urged Parrikar to meet chief ministers of other major mining states to evolve “a transparent and efficient system of allocation of leases, along with a robust regulatory framework that best serves India’s interests.”
The letter also laid thrust on the need to safeguard environmental fears and clearly spells out that inter-generational equity should not be compromised in the process of easing the mining sector as already stressed by the Supreme Court.
“The Mines Ministry’s priorities also include re-invigorating of mining sector, improving investment scenario and reaping benefits of enhanced technology and best practices,” the communication reads.
