Over the past few weeks a lot of sand erosion has occurred at Sernabatim Beach causing substantial damage to the main entry steps leading down from the main road. They have all but collapsed endangering the lives of people who are still forced to use them owing to lack of alternatives.
Recently, a student narrowly escaped injury by a falling light pole whose inadequate foundation was undermined by the strong waves, similar was the case with a gazebo which was installed at the beach as part of a beautification drive.
The latest is a precariously hanging toilet block which is all but waiting to fall upon some unsuspecting passersby.
What is shocking is the complete antipathy by the civic authorities towards such disasters in the making. No structural remedial measures are being initiated to set right this state of affairs. Are the concerned government engineers waiting for a fatality to occur before they wake up from their slumber?
