The Mapusa Municipal Council is said to be planning to acquire land for a junkyard for old vehicles. It plans to move the unwanted vehicles which are abandoned by the people on the city roads to this junkyard for their eventual disposal.
The number of new vehicles which come on the road is increasing every week and it is quite possible that people will abandon more unwanted vehicles on the roads, especially those having no resale value, as this is the easiest way to get rid of them. In this situation, it would be better if MMC identifies the owners of the abandoned vehicles with the help of the RTO and ask them to make their own arrangements for their disposal or pay the expenses involved. It should not be a “You dump, I remove”, sort of routine for the MMC since disposal of the vehicles costs public money.
Then there are those who keep their old vehicles outside their compound wall for sentimental reasons. They just don’t want to part with them. If their attachment to them is so strong, let them keep their respective vehicle in their compound and even place a flower on its bonnet every day. Public roads are meant for free flow of traffic and they should be free of permanent keeping or parking of private vehicles.
