The Civil Society has also decided to start a campaign urging people not to re-elect the current councillors.
Adv Gomes has applauded Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza’s statement of having citizens’ monitoring committees at the council level. He stated, “I expect the minister to remember the words he spoke and make the committee a reality as it is the only way to keep corruption and bad practices of the councillors at bay.
He continued, “We wish to send a strong message to whoever is going to be elected; we will monitor the municipal affairs and expose wrongdoings. We will go to the extent of filing vigilance cases against the councillors if they are caught on the wrong foot.
With Margao citizens banking on the NGOs and social workers who have filed their candidature for the election, the present councillors will fund it tough to retain their spots.
