CM launches portal to ease commercial plantation of trees

PANJIM: On the eve of World Environment Day, the State government launched an online portal to ease commercial plantation of trees, on Friday.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant launched the portal to facilitate the registration of farmers and other landowners so as to exempt commercial tree plantation areas and all the trees rose henceforth on private non-forest areas for economic benefits.

“We have launched an online portal for commercial plantations introduced by the Forest Department. Anyone who wants to start commercial plantation of commercially viable species of trees, can apply in advance at the time of planting the tree and after five years or so when he wants to cut the tree he can produce the permission he had already applied for,” Sawant explained.

Sawant said that tree plantation should not be for the sake of it but it should also be commercially viable.

The theme for the World Environment Day this year’s celebration was ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.

The Chief Minister also launched State-wide three-month long programme of free distribution of saplings of ornamental, commercial and medicinal trees from 23 nurseries. Forest Department intends to distribute more than five lakh saplings.
