Taking forward its decision to personally monitor the situation at the Cuncolim treatment plant on a day to day basis, the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to seek the assistance of environmentalist, Clinton Vaz and activist, Lorna Fernandes.
CMC has asked Clinton and Lorna to support the civic body in closely monitoring the situation at the waste treatment plant for the first 100 days as per the programme chalked out by the body. The council has decided to rope in environmentalists to streamline and tone up the infrastructure at the waste treatment plant set up near the Cuncolim industrial estate. The decision was taken by chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas and vice-chairperson Mario Moraes. Moraes informed the media that Clinton has agreed to assist the CMC in overcoming the problems plaguing the waste treatment plant and that Lorna has also volunteered to give her expertise in waste treatment. At a later stage, after evaluating the progress and results, the council will take a call whether to engage Clinton as the consultant for the civic body on waste treatment.
It may be recalled that the past council body had been criticized over its failure to ensure segregation of garbage at source and even though CMC has become a binless town, garbage is still seen dumped at places across the road and at places in front of the industrial estate, Culwado, the market, Comba, Biunsa etc. The garbage treatment plant was set up in 2009 at IDC and Cuncolim has a well-equipped landfill site and the door to door garbage collection was initiated in 2010 but segregation at source continues to be a major drawback as well as operational problems at the treatment plant.
In a related move, the council has also decided to ask the co-operation of the public for a cleanliness and beautification drive in the council jurisdiction starting from December 1.
The civic body has procured lamps and RCC slabs to illuminate the stretch of the road in the city and decided to replace all the broken slabs along the stretch. The council has also decided to whitewash the road stretch between Culwado to Raghoba Dessai house and the Palki road, besides the stretch of the highway from the bus stand to the Khope shop and the internal road leading to the market via the St Francis Xavier Chapel.
