PANJIM: The Congress has sought Goa Governor Satya Pal Malik’s intervention to stay an alleged unlawful transportation of coal, imported from South Africa through a Singaporean vessel, from Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to Amona in Bicholim taluka.

The party has also demanded cessation of all the activities at MPT and inland waterways, till the lockdown is lifted.
In a letter to Governor, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar has pointed out that in direct violation of 21-day nationwide lockdown of businesses and civic life, imposed by Central government, a Singaporean Vessel-M V Ikan Pulas, carrying coal powder from Richards Bay (South Africa), has docked at MPT, with 150 African sailors onboard, on April 4.
“It has been clandestinely transporting coal dust from Mormugao Port to a plant at Amona in Bicholim under the blessings of Goa Government,” he alleged.
Chodankar said that this unlawful transportation has created panic and distress amongst villagers of Amona and nearby areas as those who are manning the transportation of barges from the vessel to the plant are coming in direct contact with these African sailors onboard the vessel, who, may have been infected with COVID-19.
