The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) appears to be running out ideas as to how to put things in order in the market. The municipality is already faced with a host of problems.
The congested Mapusa market has created a total confusion among the consumers and vendors too as the municipality, is yet to provide the latter a desired place to sell their goods.
Not only the visitors are confused but even the vendors are not relocated at specific location.
With the new vegetable and fish market complex already in place, some vendors have been shifted there while others are forced to squat or sit at any vacant location to sell their goods. Over 30 vegetable sellers, both local and non-Goan, are reportedly found sitting outside the new vegetable market complex to sell their goods. Before the construction of vegetable market complex, there was a need to either reduce the number of sellers or arrange a place for them in the new market.
Due to the congestion in the market, it is difficult for the visitors to move freely at the new vegetable market complex.
To add to this, a few vegetable sellers are reportedly found sitting inside the market in line with the fruit sellers, which is reserved for the latter. Some of them even sit in between the parked vehicles to sell their items.
According to MMC, the problem will be solved only after issuing vendor registration cards. But these vendors have been waiting since the last one-and-half years despite paying the amount. It may sound strange but there are allegations that if any vendor fails to come to the market for two or three days, then that vacant place is occupied by some other vendor.
Two-wheeler riders too move freely inside market and this movement has been causing lots of problems to the pedestrians. With parking as a major problem in Mapusa market almost every vacant area inside the market is used by the vendors or visitors for parking.
