Two higher secondary schools and a high school will shift to the Cujira school complex located on the outskirts of the capital when the new academic year begins in June.Dr K B Hedgewar High School, Dhempe Higher Secondary School of Arts & Science and Dempo HSS of Commerce will operate from new school buildings in the Directorate of Education’s school complex at Cujira.
Six city-based schools – Mushtifund Saunsthan, Hedgewar HS at Mala-Panjim, Rosary High School in Miramar, Dhempe HSS of Arts and Science and Dempo HSS of Commerce, both operating from the same infrastructure in Miramar, and Anjuman Nurul Islam High School, near Panjim Church – had agreed to move to the common infrastructure.
Education Director Gajanan Bhat has confirmed the development stating that the shifting of schools will be conducted in a phased manner. “The three institutions will operate from the new premises from the coming academic year. The shifting process will begin soon. The others will shift once construction of the buildings is completed,” he said.
The complex was supposed to become operational from June 2014 but delayed due to reasons such as objections from certain sections of parents arguing that the travelling would consume time. However, the three-year deadline for the six schools to complete construction of buildings at the complex and shift operations ends mid-2015.As per records, the schools were allotted land by the State government at the complex on a lease period of over 60 years with the basic idea to decongest the city by shifting schools with a large student population and also provide them with better infrastructure. The Cujira complex was mooted as a number of educational institutions in Panjim are situated right along the roads, and some of them at close distance from each other, resulting in traffic congestion particularly at peak hours.
