cyclone Phyan victims to get more compensation

The government today assured to give additional compensation to the families of the 67 fisherman who lost their lives when cyclone Phyan hit the state last year.
The Opposition crticised the government for a giving compensation of only Rs 50,000 to the victims’ family.
“We were waiting for some amendments to be made in the Natural Calamity Fund rules under which we could give them Rs 2 lakh as compensation,” he said adding “However, we have already given them Rs 50,000 from Chief Minister Relief Fund and if need be we will grant them another Rs 50,000 from the fund.”
FOUR / SIX LANNING OF NH: Kamat said the final decision on the four or six lanning of the NH17 and NH4a would be taken only after consulting the legislators from the respective constituencies.
“Like we have done in the case of illegal religious places we will submit the detailed plan to all the respective legislators through whose constituencies the highways pass,” he said adding “…let the legislators then make recommendations to the government.”
“Everybody here want widening of highways but we have to see that the demolition is minimized and I think this will help us in addressing the issue,” Kamat stated in the House.
SCRAPYARD: Chief Minister said that the government will identify a place in South Goa where all scrapeyards – presently scattered across the state will be placed.
“Till now 400-odd owners have registered with us and we will now scrutinise their applications and find a place for them somewhere in South,” he told the House.
PRICE INTERVENTION: The government will involve more co-operative Societies in the Government Intervention in Price Control Scheme, the House was told today.
Chief Minister Digamabar Kamat said that the government will involve 50 co-op societies so as to reach maximum number of people.
“We will increase the societies as well as the number of vehicles supplying the commodities,” he said.
Aldona legislator Dayanand Narvekar as well as Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar had criticised the government over the scheme.
The chief minister also said that he has instructed the Horticulture Corporation to see that the priority should be given to local farmers while buying the vegetables.
Parrikar had charged that the Horticulture Corporation was buying veggies from neighbouring Belgaum for hefty commission.
“We will give first priority to locals even if the corporation faces loss we will not mind,” he said adding “Let the horticulture Corporation employees go there and buy items from them wherever they are in the state.”
