Operations at the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) have been suspended indefinitely due to a developing cyclonic circulation off the North Karnataka and Goa coast, the port announced on Wednesday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the presence of a cyclonic system over the region as of 8:30 AM IST on May 21. Forecasts suggest that a low-pressure area is likely to form within the next 72 hours, increasing the risk of severe weather in the area.

In response, MPA officials have taken preemptive safety measures to protect both infrastructure and maritime activity. All ocean-going vessels have been instructed to leave the port and remain at sea until conditions stabilize. These ships will be re-berthed once the weather clears.
For vessels that cannot move out to sea, including smaller crafts and barges, strict safety protocols have been enforced. These include securing additional mooring lines, keeping engines on standby, and relocating to sheltered or upriver waters as necessary.
“These precautionary steps are in accordance with our Standard Operating Procedures,” MPA officials said, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring port safety. The authority also confirmed that berthing and un-berthing charges during the suspension will be covered by the MPA.
The port will remain closed until further notice, with regular weather assessments guiding future decisions.
