PANJIM: A portion of an abandoned building situated near Ganesh Temple, St Inez, collapsed on Saturday evening.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, as the building had been declared unsafe and vacated several months ago. The building belonged to one Surya Nagevekar, it was informed.
After getting the information, the Panjim fire personnel rushed to the site and cordoned off the entire building.
North Goa Collector Sneha Gitte and Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate and Deputy Mayor SanjeevNaik too rushed to the spot and assessed the situation. As a safety measures, they asked the nearby residents to shift to safer places.
The Collector said that the entire building will be demolished since it is unsafe and in order to prevent further collapse or mishaps. “We don’t want to risk the lives of people,” she said.
The impact of the collapse caused vibration to nearby houses, informed locals, who rushed to safety after the portion of the building came crashing down.
