Davorlim man gets lifer for murder

MARGAO: South Goa additional sessions Judge Vandana Tendulkar convicted and sentenced a resident of Davorlim, Chanappa alias Channu Gangannawar, to undergo life imprisonment for abduction and murder of 20-year-old Renuka Hanganhalli.

It was the case of prosecution that accused Chanappa on intervening night of September 18-19, 2011 between 6 pm to 9 am abducted Renuka with the intention to seduce or force her to have illicit relations which act of the accused was resisted by the victim lady and hence, accused murdered her and dumped her body in a ditch in the bushes near Power House, Aquem-Margao. 
Complaint was lodged by Yamannappa, husband of the deceased on September 26, 2011 and same day the accused was arrested and since then he is in custody. The Margao police registered a offence of murder, causing disappearance of evidence and kidnapping or abducting in order to murder under sections 302, 201 and 364 IPC. 
Public prosecutor Subash Dessai argued that the accused committed heinous offence of murder, destroying evidence and abducting in order to murder. He prayed for stern punishment, life imprisonment should be given to the accused as women in the society need to be protected. Further, the character of the accused was unbecoming and adamant and that the court should impose punishment befitting the crime so that court reflect public abhorrence of the crime.
