Demonetisation hits vehicle sales

MAPUSA: The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes appears to have impacted vehicle purchase as registration of vehicles at Pernem and Mapusa RTOs has reported a steep decline.

According to records, around 632 vehicles were registered under Pernem RTO in month of October, but after the demonisation, that is, from November 8 till November 22, only 227 vehicles have been registered there – a fifty percent decrease as compared to October.
In the Mapusa RTO, 1110 vehicles were registered in October, but after demonisation only 697 vehicles have been registered so far — nearly a 40 percent decrease.
Before the demonetization, people having surplus money used the same to buy vehicles, but now only those in need of vehicles are buying the same.
Meanwhile, a large number of shopkeepers have shut their shops to exchange their cash in respective banks.
