PANJIM: In an attempt at damage control, Dhempe College of Arts & Science on Thursday urged Goa University (GU) Chancellor Dr Mridula Sinha to allow the declaration of the results of supplementary exams, which have been kept in abeyance.
College Principal Dr Yasmin Modassir called on the Chancellor requesting that students should not be punished for something that is not their fault. “There is no fault on the part of the students and they should not be punished. Moreover, the college conducted remedial classes and subsequently supplementary exams to ensure the future of students is not at stake,” a source said.
Sinha, also the Goa Governor, has assured to get back to the college in two days after consulting the government.
With GU dragged into controversy over the non-declaration of results, the fact that Dhempe College flouted the GU ordinance has been overlooked.
Students have been arguing that GU declared the exams null and void despite them fulfilling the 75 percent attendance requirement, on attending remedial classes conducted by the college. However, little is being said about the college’s decision to conduct the exams despite knowing this was in violation of the GU norms. Moreover, the college failed to display month-wise attendance records of students resulting in the ongoing chaos. As per another GU ordinance OA – 17.3, it is mandatory for all colleges to display attendance of its students every month.
College states its decision was taken on humanitarian grounds to allow students to fulfill the minimum attendance requirement. The Principal remained unavailable for comments despite repeated attempts.
