PORVORIM: The water-logged ditch near police quarters in Porvorim has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
During monsoon, the ditch gets filled with water and migrants use the water to wash their clothes, etc. The ditch has become a nuisance for the residents of police quarters.
Speaking to Herald, residents of police quarters said there has been rise in mosquitoes due to the stagnant water in the ditch. Residents said they complained to the authorities concerned, but in vain.
When contacted, medical practitioner, Dr Vinay Prabhu Dessai, said malaria parasites breed in stagnant water. “There has been substantial rise in malaria cases in Porvorim during monsoon and precautions should be taken both by the health authorities and the residents to prevent malaria,” said Dr Prabhu Dessai.
Residents have called upon health authorities to carry out measures to prevent health hazards.
