PANJIM: The Director of Municipal Administration has announced the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and consultative committees to the Corporation of the City of Panaji.
The order was issued under the Goa Municipalities Act 1968 a couple of days back stating that in the absence of election rules under the CCP Act, that the election procedures prescribed for conduct of elections of chairperson and vice chairperson be followed as in force under the Act for electing the mayor, deputy mayor and consultative committees.
The elections were slated for March 20, in fact sources say that the incumbent Mayor had asked that elections be held on that day given that there was a meeting at which his councillor Kabir Makhija’s names had been shortlisted from the Atanassio babush Monserrate panel as mayor and deputy mayor.
CCP sources say that the election date has been now been finalized for March 28 and there has been hectic politicking and various permutations and combinations being made by various parties that are jockeying for the post.
The CCP has been passing resolutions on various issues like film shootings and is in the middle of finalising and implementing various projects like the multi story parking, the garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, various projects under JNNURM including the proposed cleaning of the St Inez creek and the transportation issue.
