18-30. That’s the average age group of
your everyday criminal according to the
National Crime Records Bureau. Criminals
are getting younger with the age group of
persons arrested for crimes like theft, burglary and
even murder and kidnapping being in the range of
18-30 years and Goa is the most vulnerable for crimes
compared to other smaller states and union territories
(except Delhi) such as Sikkim, Tripura, Lakshadweep
and Puducherry, figures of national crime bureau for
year 2012 show.
According to the bureau, police figures reveal that
280 people in this age group were arrested for theft
followed 152 for burglaries.
The records also indicate
that right from cases like
dacoity, robbery and thefts; this
age group has taken control
over the crime with full force.
The records further unravel the
disturbing truth that younger
people are committing murder,
and rape as well as getting
involved in kidnappings.
Besides the youngsters’
increasing involvement in
heinous crimes, the age group
of 30-45 years that follows the
former has certainly raised alarm
bells. For burglary, 67 persons
of this age group were arrested
while 81 were caught for thefts,
42 for attempted murder and
17 were arrested for murder.
Nonetheless, not a single person in the age group of
30-45 years was involved in kidnapping and dacoity
cases in the entire year.
The heinous crimes including break-ins also reveal
increasing involvement of underage boys and girls.
Incidentally, in the same year in the month of month,
Goa police had busted criminals-Apna Ghar staff nexus
that exposed how juvenile inmates were smuggled out
of the home to commit crimes and were handed back.
The children had confessed of committing a string of
offences ranging from theft of vehicles to burglaries,
armed robberies and even a murder. The tech-savvy
delinquents even negotiated on the use of weapons
for crimes on Facebook, while inside the shelter-cumremand
home.
