Don’t rush to doctors for minor symptoms: IMA

PANJIM: Amidst the fear of Coronavirus outbreak across country, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Goa, has advised public not to rush to doctors for minor symptoms and stay indoors. 

IMA has issued prevention public advisory in wake of coronavirus pandemic. Goa, which had nearly 50 suspects, is yet to report any positive case.

“For minor symptoms don’t rush to your doctor and please stay home as much as possible if you are well or have minimal symptoms to reduce your risk of infection at OPD or Hospitals from others,” IMA Goa Chief Dr S Samuel Arawattigi said in the statement. 

But those with severe symptoms like breathing difficulty must see your doctor immediately, he said.

 IMA has urged people to ensure hand washing with soap and water for at least 40 to 60 seconds minimum as it is effective way to minimize exposure. If soap and water are not available, use a genuine alcohol-based (minimum 70%) hand sanitiser for 20 to 40 seconds minimum.

Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, social distancing, stay six feet away from other people and avoid close contact within six feet with people who are sick.

IMA has also advised to cover while coughing or sneezing with tissue paper, then discard the tissue in a trash container. Else use handkerchiefs but disinfect them before reuse.

 Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces like floors, door knobs, handles, etc. The virus can be effectively killed from surfaces with a solution of either ethanol (62-71% alcohol), Lysol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide), or 1% sodium hypochlorite (0.1% bleach) in just one minute.

Public are not advised to wear facemasks at this time, but only those who have symptoms or close contacts who care for them should wear 3 layer surgical masks.
