MARGAO: Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai while praising Nepalis for their valour, courage and loyalty said while living in Goa they have to become like Goenkar and respect the Goan language, tradition and culture and asserted that Goa is different from the rest of the country.
“Goa is a jewel in the crown of the country and hence it is more important to be Goenkar in Goa than it is to be in other parts of the country,” he said while admitting that Nepalis have been living in Goa for many years due to various reasons.
While admitting that this was his first interaction with the Nepali community in Goa which he said is numbering around 50,000 which is quite a significant number and said they had to accept the unique living style of Goans, who believe in Goenkarponn.
He said Goa was cosmopolitan, tolerant, secular and a liberal State which is known for tourism and hospitable people, who are very loving and kind in nature.
“Whenever somebody comes to Goa we reciprocate the same attitude we have of kind and loving nature,” he said.
Vijai said the aim was to go forward and for that he said he local sentiments have to be respected and urged the Nepali population to do that.
“Nepalis are known for their loyalty, valour, courage and sacrifice and the Gurkha Regiment has proved this time and again,” he said.
While pointing out that the 1950 treaty between Nepal and India is an unique agreement, he said, “Nepalis and Indians have to live and grow together and they have to be conscious that Goa is Goa and not another part of India.”
“You have to become a Goenkar and learn to respect our land, traditions, culture and even the architecture,” he said while urging them to remain united and not allow any politics to hamper their activities.
Vijai was speaking at the first volleyball tournament organised by the Goa Nepali Society and assured them better infrastructure and facilities for a similar programme next year.
