MARGAO: Chaos reigned supreme on the National Highway-17 outside the Cuncolim bus stand with many a bus taking passengers directly on the road without entering the bus stand.
School and college going students, besides office goers faced the brunt of the traffic snarls outside the bus stand, especially during the morning peak hours. Aggravating the situation is the narrow highway road, with damaged shoulders along the entire stretch.
When the situation was brought to the notice of the local MLA Rajan Naik, he said that a PWD official have been entrusted with the work of designing the road with a traffic circle to regulate the entry and exit of buses into the bus stand. That’s not all. The MLA contended that the government was in the process of preparing estimates for the widening of the entire highway road from Uskannibandh to the bus stand.
Green Goa Foundation, however, pointed out that the chaotic conditions at the bus stand should stop immediately. “Buses plying from Canacona and proceeding to Margao and vice versa cause an obstruction to traffic at the Cuncolim bus stand when they collect and drop passengers, thus causing a hindrance to the general public and other vehicles heading towards Margao. Instead of using the bus stand to collect the passengers, these buses prefer to collect the passengers on the road, creating difficulties for other commuters,” GGF Chairman Raison Alemida said, while demanding that the authorities post a traffic constable outside the bus stand to man and regulate the traffic.
“The massive bus stand is like a white elephant since it is still not utilised to its optimum capacity,” he rued.
