Ex-GMC dean took money from students, deposes doc

An associate professor with the Goa Medical College has said that former GMC dean was involved in taking money while functioning as an Examiner for the medical students.
“Dr Manindra Pal had suffered a stigma during his tenure being involved in taking money while functioning as an Examiner for the medical students. There was a stigma when he was involved in negligence case concerning a private Gynecologist,” Dr Edmund Rodrigues, associate professor in GMC forensic medicine told Sessions Judge while deposing in a murder case.
The revelation came during the Court hearing in a murder case of Vasant Sastikar (65) who was allegedly assaulted by Manohar Sastikar and his son Shailesh Shastikar with Samai metal brass in 2008. While, Manohar died during the course of the trial, Shailesh is in custody since his arrest on May 2008.
Dr Rodrigues who carried out the autopsy of the deceased said that he found nine ante-mortem injuries which were caused by blunt weapon. “Cause of death was due to head injury consequent to blunt force impact by object which was necessarily fatal and fresh at the time of death,” he said.
Whereas, Dr Pal who has been a gynecologist and gave evidence on behalf of the accused contradicted opinion put forth by Dr Rodrigues. Public Prosecutor Subhash Desai in the cross-examination brought out to the Court that Dr Pal never conducted post-mortem examination and that he deals with illness pertaining to females.
“Dr Pal also admitted that as a dean he performed administrative functions and did not see the body of the deceased in the present case,” the PP said.
Dr Rodrigues, on request by the PP was re-examined wherein he confirmed to have conducted more than 6000 autopsies since 1986 while working with the forensic department.
