PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has directed Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to expedite the process for setting up solid waste treatment facility at Bainguinim.
At a high-level meeting, the chief minister and the GWMC chairman held a detailed discussion on various issues pertaining to garbage disposal for Panjim, which is currently facing major problem to treat the waste in absence of dedicated dumping ground and treatment facility.
GWMC Managing Director Sanjit Rodrigues has been asked to expedite the process for taking over the possession of land at Bainguinim for setting up the waste management facility.
The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) last month decided to hand over 1.71 lakh sq mtrs of land at Bainguinim to the Corporation for setting up the facility. The land was acquired by CCP in 2009.
The facility, with a 250-tonne capacity, intends to handle the waste generated in five assembly constituencies of Tiswadi taluka — Panjim, Taleigao, St Cruz, St Andre and Old Goa.
Further, the chief minister has asked Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) to ensure that the operation of garbage facility behind Heera Petrol pump commences immediately. GSIDC is expected to hand over the facility to CCP for execution by this month-end. The facility will treat six tonnes of waste daily.
