MARGAO: After turning a blind eye to the stray dog menace, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to tone up the infrastructure to meet the growing requirements.
After lengthy discussions with representatives of NGOs and veterinary officials, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik said the dog shelter at Sonsodo needs immediately expansion by increasing the dog cages to 100 from a bare 20.
The MMC chief officer along with Sandra Fernandes and former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho also visited the dog shelter at Sonsodo and took stock of the requirements. “I am of the firm opinion that the dog shelter needs urgent attention. The Civic body has proposed 100 cages at the dog shelter and acquisition of additional land for its expansion. We have also written to the government to assist the Civic body to tone up the infrastructure,” she added.
Former MMC chairperson Savio Coutinho expressed happiness that the incumbent MMC chief officer has offered her full support and cooperation to take the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme to the logical conclusion. “Increasing the cages to 100 will go a long way in overcoming the problems at the dog shelter,” he added.
