The Bicholim Police have registered a case against two unidentified persons, a man and a woman, for allegedly cheating a woman and robbing her of a mangalsutra worth approximately Rs 6 lakh by posing as police personnel.

According to the complaint filed by a resident of Piligao, the incident took place while she was on her way to Gaonkarwada to catch a bus. The accused allegedly stopped her on the road and took her to a secluded spot, falsely claiming to be police officers.

The victim stated that the duo warned her about an alleged rise in thefts in the area and convinced her to remove her mangalsutra for “safekeeping.” They reportedly wrapped the jewellery in paper and handed it back to her before leaving the spot.

However, upon reaching home, the woman was shocked to discover that the packet contained a stone instead of her gold mangalsutra. Realising she had been cheated, she immediately approached the police.

Bicholim Police have begun an investigation into the case and are making efforts to identify and trace the accused, while cautioning citizens to remain alert against fraudsters impersonating law enforcement personnel.
