PANJIM: Fire broke out in the Microbiology Department of the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) at Bambolim on Thursday and a short circuit has been suspected to be the cause.

FDA Director Sweta Desai said, “When we observed smoke billowing out of the windows, we called the Fire and Emergency Services and all the 62 staff were asked to vacate the laboratory by then. The blazes were spotted in a room with high tech instruments where food is tested and micro-analysis are done. We will have to see how much damage has been caused as only two rooms were filled with smoke,” she said.
Shripad Gawas, Fire Officer, said, “We received a call from the FDA and we immediately rushed to the spot and found that fire had broken out in one of the lab rooms. There were four LPG cylinders kept in the laboratory which we managed to remove. It appears that the cause of the fire could be an electrical short circuit but we will find out the exact reason.”
