PANJIM: Property worth Rs 177 crore was saved from fire accidents during the last calendar year while another Rs 6.33 crore property was save by firemen in other accidents.
The annual report released by the Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services indicates that while property totaling Rs 183.48 crore was saved from all accidents, the loss was calculated at Rs 18.10 crore.
The property saved includes Herald’s Verna printing press that was engulfed in a massive fire during the evening hours of November 17, 2016. In a shocking tragedy, a significant portion of the printing press at Verna had caught fire with the blaze spreading quickly but timely reaction by the Herald staff to call the fire station and the fire fighters’ prompt action saved a large part of the property from being damaged. Despite the tragedy, Herald readers were not deprived of their daily news.
Out of 111 major calls, the second major loss of Rs 98 lakh was recorded at a South Goa based resort’s server and telephone exchange rooms in February last year.
