CANACONA: Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado on Monday launched the ‘Fish Culture Project,’ to breed highly prized fish in the sea off Canacona taluka.
Furtado released fertilized fish eggs of ‘Chonak’ and ‘Modso’ into the protected cages in the sea at Talpona and Polem in the presence of Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar and Velim MLA Benjamin D’Silva.
According to sources, the State government has adopted the Central government’s ‘fish culture project’ to breed specialized fish in the sea at an estimated cost of Rs 1.7 crore.
In all, 50 sites have been earmarked in the State and the government launched the scheme from Canacona at the two sites at Talpona in Poingujinim village and Polem in Loliem.
The government has formed five-member groups each from the Pagi and Gabi Samaj, who have been provided with the required infrastructure for the project.
