MARGAO: In a statement, which on the face of it, is surprising and goes against the Congress party line, the Leader of the Opposition in Goa and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has said that the “bhumi pujan” (site worship) of the Ram temple at Ayodhya was a “moment of pride”.
While the Congress in Goa has not made any statement on the occasion of the foundation stone laying ceremony at Ayodhya, Digambar Kamat, who, it is believed, has been keeping back channels open for a potential political handshake with the BJP decided to actually issue a statement.
He said, “It is a moment of pride for all of us that the foundation stone of the sacred Shree Ram Temple will be laid.”
Kamat said the foundation stone being laid on the tithi of Shravan Krishna Dvitiya, Wednesday at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the auspicious presence of various spiritual scholars and saints, and is a moment of pride for all of us.
He did not stop at that and went further. “The most awaited action of the government will be in line with the teachings of Lord Shree Ram to help the deserving & needy during critical times & extend them a helping hand,” Kamat said.
Couching his fulsome support for the Ram temple, the former CM stated, “On this auspicious occasion, I appeal to the Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant to announce a financial package for all those who have suffered badly during COVID lockdown and release pending dues of all social welfare schemes like DSS, pension to widows, persons with disabilities, Laadli Laxmi and Mamata Scheme, senior citizens and bring a smile on people’s faces on this historic day.”
He also prayed for the pandemic to end and wished that people get back to their lives soon.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar, in a late night statement said, “Yes, we endorse and support the statement of Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat. Everyone, including us wants Ramrajya in the country. They (BJP) have been promising Ramrajya in the country. But, where the Ramrajya they promised?”
