MARGAO: Goencho Ekvott (GE), the anti-coal organisation in Goa has reacted sharply to the developments at Nagoa-Verna where coal was dumped much to the shock and surprise of the public.

“The reported statement made by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) said that the illegally dumped coal near Verna Railway Station belongs to Vedanta Group and is bound for Jharkhand which is over 2000 kms away from Goa, raises the question about the Mormugao Port and it’s operators/handlers and the necessity to transport the hazardous coal cargo from the extreme West of our country to the East of India, when other more economically viable ports at Haldia etc. are just 430 kms away from Jharkhand?,” said Orville Dourado Rodrigues, GE founder member.
“This does not make economic sense to us and there appears a hidden conspiracy to irreversibly destroy the most vibrant and prosperous part of our tiny State along with its rich heritage, culture & customs where fishing and tourism is the backbone of our State’s economy. It is understood by all that Coal and tourism & fishing cannot co-exist side by side. It has been two days since the Deputy Collector of Salcete visited the illegal coal dump, however the dump-yard continues to exist despite a clear verbal order by the Authority,” he added.
