In a landmark development nearly six decades after notifying its first protected area, Goa has officially approved Wildlife Management Plans (WMPs) for all its five wildlife sanctuaries and one national park. The State Wildlife Board recently gave the green light to the WMPs for Bondla, Netravali, Mhadei, Cotigao, and Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuaries, including the Bhagwan Mahaveer National Park.
The newly approved plans for 2023-24 outline a 10-year conservation strategy aimed at enhancing biodiversity and habitat protection through sustainable, animal-friendly methods. Key initiatives include the creation of artificial waterholes, plantation of fruit-bearing and fodder species, and measures to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
