Goa faces 3.89 crore loss as sleeper bus loophole emerges: Vijai Sardesai

Vijai Sardesai has highlighted a significant loophole in Goa’s intra-state bus operations, claiming the state government is losing nearly 3.89 crore annually due to irregular registrations of sleeper buses. According to Sardesai, sleeper buses registered in Goa are required to pay ₹300 per seat to operate, whereas buses registered outside the state must pay ₹600 per seat. However, he alleged that around 300 buses from outside Goa have been registered locally through “Leave and License Agreements,” allowing them to pay the lower Goan fee. Based on estimates shared by Sardesai, a 36-seater Goan-registered bus generates roughly ₹10,800 per day, while a non-Goa bus should contribute ₹21,600 daily. By using local agreements, these buses reportedly avoid higher charges, leading to a substantial annual revenue loss of about ₹3.89 crore to the state exchequer. Sardesai’s claims have raised concerns over regulatory compliance in Goa’s bus operations.
