The Goa government is planning to introduce Sports Excellence Centres or sports schools from the next academic year to ensure the effective utilisation of sports coaches throughout the year, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said.
Addressing the issue of underutilisation of coaches during the monsoon season, the minister stated that the state currently has around 110 coaches who receive salaries but are unable to function optimally due to limited outdoor activity during the rains. “During the monsoon, we cannot make much use of them. Their utilisation is not done the way it is supposed to be,” Tawadkar said.

To address this, the government is considering deploying coaches at indoor sports facilities across the state, including venues in Margao, Bambolim and Peddem, as well as private institutes with indoor infrastructure. This, the minister said, would allow coaches to work productively for all 365 days of the year and help nurture sports talent more effectively.
Tawadkar further announced that a dedicated scheme would be launched and a formal proposal would be placed to introduce the concept of Sports Excellence Centres or sports schools from the next academic year, aimed at strengthening Goa’s sports ecosystem and athlete development.
