PANJIM: Goa is set to become the first State to roll out the ambitious STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) programme on December 15 at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). Considered a land mark project, STEMI will be launched by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane.
During a recent media interaction Rane had said that GMC sees around 200 such heart attack cases annually.
As per a government statement, the programme aims to decrease cardiac mortality and morbidity resulting from STEMI by aiding prompt and accurate diagnosis in peripheral health centers of Goa using tele-ECG, thrombolytic of the clot using newer thrombolytic agents and prompt transfer to Goa Medical College using cardiac/ALS ambulances of 108 GVK-EMRI.
Under the programme, doctors will be trained to thrombolyse patients who suffered from heart attacks in the golden hour, which is the first hour after the onset of heart attack, during which, if appropriate action is taken, can reverse the effects of the heart attack.
