PANJIM: Goa’s unemployment rate decreased by 5.1% from the 25.7% that was seen at the end of April, 2021 to the 20.6% seen at the end of May 2021.
These figures were released by private think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

However, Goa is now at the seventh highest in the list of States and Union Territories in terms of the latest unemployment figures of May 2021.
Delhi tops the list with an unemployment rate of 46.6%, followed by Haryana, 29.1%, Tamil Nadu at 28%, Rajasthan at 27.6%, Puducherry at 24% and then Kerala at sixth place with 23.5%.
Furthermore, from February 2021, Goa’s unemployment figures have consistently been over 20 per cent. Incidentally in May 2020, Goa’s unemployment figure was at 21.2%
It is to be noted that there are few frequently updated government metrics for tracking jobs in India, particularly in the informal sector. As a consequence, high frequency indicators like the CMIE Unemployment Survey tends to be used as a proxy for evaluating the health of the labour market.
It may be recalled that in the first week of April, while commenting on Goa’s unemployment figures of March 2021, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had said that CMIE’s reports on unemployment rate in Goa is unrealistic and unreliable as it is fluctuating too erratically every month.
