PANJIM: The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation has been directed to construct around 100 new schools in a bid to phase out old and dilapidated government educational buildings in a bid to revamp the educational infrastructure in the state.
GSIDC has been given the task of repairing government school buildings, since September 2012,
“There are however more than 800 government institutions imparting education from primary to high school level and the task is a mammoth one,” said an official of the GSIDC when contacted by Herald.
While re-constructing a building is a different task from undertaking minor repairs, the corporation has decided to chalk out a plan on how to go about the latest task entrusted to it.
According to education department, as many as 77 schools are in urgent need of repairs and while financial sanctions have been accorded to 52 schools, estimates have been drawn up for 25 schools and all these works would have to be carried out by the corporation.
While the Taleigao government school, whose roof collapsed Monday, was also in the list of buildings to be minor repairs, an official said. The department of education has pointed out that there were no reports on the condition of the roof. This roof repair and reinforcement works would however be taken up on priority (unfortunately after the collapse) through the GSIDC, said Deputy Director Anil Pawar.
So far, the GSIDC has constructed three new government primary schools in Sattari taluka and consultants are on to job to have 100 new schools to replace the old ones in various talukas of Goa.
“Work on this is taking a while as there is a lot of documentation involved pertaining to land titles,” said a GSIDC official. “Wherever the titles are clear we have started works,” the official informed.
