VASCO/CANACONA: The Meteorological Department has predicted that Mormugao taluka and other southern parts of Goa would witness gusty winds and heavy rainfall. People have been advised not to venture into sea and beaches due to rough sea and strong currents.
Dr Krishnamurty Padgalvar, director and scientist at Meteorological Centre, Goa, told Herald that recently a cyclone named ‘Vayu’ was seen moving towards the southern coastal part of India. “Some hours ago weather forecast predictions were that the cyclone is moving in North Western direction, but I had predicted that it will move in North East direction and it really moved in North East direction which is likely to hit Saurashtra Gujrat,” he added.
When asked about steps taken by his department to alert locals, Dr Padgalvar said that he has intimidated South Goa Collector and other authorities concerned to create awareness among people not to venture into sea and to stay safe. There is likely to be heavy rainfall and strong wind currents therefore fisherman folks and other people are requested to stay off the sea.
When asked whether Mormugao taluka will face cyclonic situation, Dr Padgalvar replied in negative and stated that the cyclone has moved ahead of Goa and Mormugao area is out of danger.
Meanwhile, three huge trees uprooted and fell on 33KV feeder electric alignments in the deep forests of Karmalghat and Balli cutting off the power supply to entire Canacona taluka from 6 pm on Tuesday.
Canacona witnessed high intensity winds from Tuesday evening which uprooted two huge trees at Karmalghat and at Coteamoll in Balli.
The trees which fell directly on the conductors snapped the power lines plunging entire taluka into black out from 6 pm.
Assistant engineer Vinayak Mhalsekar of Canacona electricity department said that three jungle trees fell on 33 KV line at Karmalghat and Coteamoll and they are working non-stop and the power supply would be restored latest by 10 pm.
