Heaps of tyres burnt at Dabolim
HERALD REPORTER
VASCO, JULY 11
In a crude method to get rid of scrap tyres, unknown persons burnt heaps of tyres along the highway near Dabolim International Airport on Friday afternoon.
A few tyre-servicing centres in Vasco and Kadamba Bus Depot had come under the scanner of a local body and health authorities for openly throwing tyres in dustbins near Kadamba bus stop at Vasco, thereby facilitating mosquito-breeding sites.
After the issue was highlighted in the press, authorities acted swiftly and cleared the tyres from the dustbins.
A few days later, the tyres resurfaced in the dustbins near Kadamba bus stop. On Friday, some people removed the tyres from the dustbins and burnt them near the airport.
Sources in the health department informed that it was a crude method to get rid of the scrap tyres by ignoring environmental concerns.
Sources further said that an agency from Tamil Nadu was taking scrap tyres for recycling purpose at nominal rates in Margao.
