Heavy rains in Canacona keep fire personnel on toes

CANACONA: Moderate to heavy rains lashed Canacona taluka on Saturday resulting in water logging and trees getting uprooted at different places in Canacona.
The fire and emergencies office at Canacona said it received three calls of trees getting uprooted at different locations in and around Canacona taluka. In the first instance, a jungle tree fell on an internal road at Khaddem in Padi; in the second incident of tree getting uprooted, a huge tree came crushing down on the road at Ambeaghat in Gaondongrem and blocked the road for some time putting to inconvenience the commuters till the tree was cut and cleared by fire and emergencies personnel.
In another incident a coconut tree, a breadfruit tree and a jungle tree fell on a house at Karvem in Gaondongrem. The house owner suffered a loss of around Rs 1 lakh in the unfortunate incident. However, timely action by fire personnel saved a property of over Rs 50,000 from getting destroyed. There were also reports of water entering shops due to a drain getting blocked in the vicinity at Sheller in Canacona and water logging at some places in the taluka.
